演講摘要：

In multiple myeloma, AL amyloidosis and light chain deposition disease, the detection and quantification of monoclonal proteins forms an important part of their diagnostic work up and subsequent management. The techniques available to do this include serum and urine protein electrophoresis, immunofixation and the serum free light chain assay.

This talk will focus on how the serum free light chain assay works and its relative benefits compared to urine electrophoresis for the identification of monoclonal free light chains. Topics covered include result interpretation, the optimal screening panels for monoclonal gammopathies and the monitoring of patients with multiple myeloma. All discussions will focus on the latest publications on these topics and the key recommendations from the 2009 International Myeloma Working Group guidelines.
